Summary
Flora is a circus elephant too old and arthritic to perform her tricks. Fourteen-year-old Dawn Jacobs considers Flora her best friend so Dawn's father Henry who owns a small traveling circus finds a home for Flora at the Chilipingo elephant preserve three hundred miles away. But the preserve director calls to say they've lost their funding and can no longer take Flora unless Henry pays a two hundred thousand dollar sponsorship fee. Henry doesn't have this kind of money. The egotistical trapeze artist Isabella reminds him that he doesn't even have enough to pay his performers because he spends so much on Flora's upkeep. So Henry makes the tough decision to have Flora euthanized. Dawn is devastated. She says she can't be there when it happens so Henry buys her a train ticket to the home of a nearby aunt. Dawn gets on the train but gets off again before it departs. She returns to the circus and sneaks Flora out of her tent commencing their journey to the preserve. Dawn's Aunt calls Henry to say Dawn wasn't on the train. Henry finds Flora's tent empty. He searches the town where the circus is camped but there's no sign of them. He calls Dawn leaving a voicemail message promising to keep Flora until they find a home for her. Isabella feels guilty for encouraging Henry to euthanize Flora. She accompanies him to the Sheriff's office where the Sheriff promises that his volunteers won't have any trouble locating a runaway elephant. Henry and Isabella join the search. Meanwhile a fifteen-year-old orphan Sebastian is shoplifting electronics for his mentor Fernando when they hear about a thousand dollar reward for finding a lost girl and her elephant. Dawn and Flora arrive at a farm and see the farmer tackling Sebastian who has just stolen a bag of crops. Flora scares off the farmer. Dawn Flora and Sebastian run away. After eating some of the food Sebastian stole Dawn tells him goodbye. But Sebastian convinces her he can help and she warily agrees to let him journey with them for a short time. Isabella points out to Henry that even if Dawn and Flora make it to the preserve they'll be turned away since they won't have the two hundred thousand dollar sponsorship fee. Sebastian texts Fernando that he's found the lost girl and her elephant and says he'll lead them to the town of Sabinas where he and Fernando can collect the reward. But as they continue their journey Sebastian can't help but be captivated by Flora and Dawn. He splashes around in a pond with them then he and Dawn ride Flora through a field. That night under the stars, he has second thoughts about tricking Dawn into bringing Flora to Sabinas. Henry and Isabella meet Matias at the farm where they learn that Dawn and Flora have run off with a teenaged boy who stole the farmer's crops. A news reporter interviews the farmer who claims the elephant would have crushed him if he hadn't run away. Henry is now worried that people will consider Flora a threat. Sure enough, two local hunters Bob and Runyon are hired by the mayor to shoot Flora with a tranquilizer dart. Runyon has a different idea. He plans to kill Flora and add her head to his trophy collection. Dawn Sebastian and Flora pass Bob and Runyon's tent at night. As Sebastian goes through their quads stealing supplies he hears them talking about their plan to kill Flora. Sebastian warns Dawn about their new pursuers. In the morning, they reach the big river and start swimming. Runyon shoots at Flora but misses. After a struggle Dawn Sebastian and Flora reach the other side safely. The next morning Dawn is awakened by the beeping of a text on Sebastian's phone. She sees that it's from Fernando asking when they're going to reach Sabinas and warning Sebastian not to collect the reward for himself. Sebastian pleads with Dawn saying he sent those texts the first day that now he only wants to help Dawn and Flora. But Dawn orders him to leave. Dawn and Flora resume the journey on their own
